When we start the keto regime, our body undergoes many changes in the way it functions. First, we stop using carbohydrates as a source of energy and replace them with ketones. We get rid of excess water, reduce bad cholesterol, lower blood sugar.
Sometimes, however, our body suffers additional losses – such as hair loss during keto eating. And while it may not seem like such a worrying consequence of weight loss, it’s important to know why it’s happening and how we can influence it.
Hair Loss During Keto Eating – Why Does It Happen?
First of all, it is important to clarify that very few people who follow a low-carb diet are affected by hair loss. However, sometimes it happens and if you notice it in you, it’s good to know the reason for this and how to stop it or at least reduce it.
As a rule, hair loss as a phenomenon can occur for several main reasons:
- low immunity
- iron deficiency
- hormonal disorders and thyroid problems
- medical products
- lack of vitamins and minerals
- scalp diseases caused by bacteria and even stress
- change of seasons
- inappropriate cosmetics, hair brush, etc.
As we drastically change our diet during the keto regime, it is possible that this will affect our hair. Therefore, in other types of regimes (starvation, very low-calorie diet, etc.) it is normal to notice intense hair loss.
It is important to specify that it is completely normal to lose a certain amount of hair on a daily basis – up to 100 hairs. This does not mean that we suffer from hair loss.
Basically, when we talk about hair loss due to the keto regime, we must remember that everything in our body is a process. When hair loss occurs during this period, the reasons may be several:
- intake of fewer calories
- poor protein intake
- lack of enough vitamins and minerals
- low amount of carbohydrates
- problems with metabolism and absorption of substances
Even if this happens, which is rare, keep in mind that the phenomenon is temporary and completely natural.
The reason lies, on the one hand, in the natural cycle of hair, and on the other: in the sudden change you impose on your body. It needs to make sure that it directs enough energy first to the most important tissues, systems and organs, which means that there may not be enough to maintain our hair.
However, when your body adjusts to the new regimen a few months later, your hair will grow back in place of the fallen hair and thinning will not be noticed.
Keto feeds against hair loss
Keep in mind that hair loss during a keto diet is rare because the diet is rich in protein and fat – two main elements that affect hair and its growth, in addition to vitamins and minerals.
To make sure you do not encounter this problem during ketosis, there are several foods that can help you prevent it. And best of all, they are perfectly allowed satellites of the keto regime.
Foods high in antioxidants come first: all low glycemic index vegetables and fruits will help your hair and your whole body during ketosis. Berries and green leafy vegetables, which also contain large amounts of iron, are just some of them.
A number of foods with high amounts of vitamin A are also allowed in the keto regime – also a very important element for our hair. We find it in eggs, dairy products and oily fish.
Nuts and seeds, which are also recommended as a source of nutrients and proteins during ketosis, can further help our hair. However, it is important to be careful about what exactly and how many large amounts of them we take, so as not to violate our regime.
In addition to fish, they provide us with many of our much-needed omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
How else can we help each other?
If you still notice hair loss during the keto regimen, it is important to know what you can do. Since this is a process that is guided by the state of our body and psyche, it is good to take the following measures.
Try to reduce stress – it affects every part of our body, including the condition of our hair. Get enough sleep – healthy sleep. Try not to be too demanding of yourself – in terms of food and weight loss.
Although you are in a mode, try to saturate the body so that it does not feel hungry. In addition, it is important to provide him with enough B vitamins, vitamins A, E and D, as well as iron. So do not forget to include them in your menu in the form of food or, if necessary – food supplements.
During this period, be more careful with your hair. If possible, dry it more carefully. Also look for natural oils to nourish it with, such as argan oil. In this type of therapy, pay attention to your scalp – the place where hair actually begins to grow.
It is also advisable not to subject it to too intense stress from straightening, curling and painting, if you can avoid it.
Take care of your immunity and the sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals in your body. And if you still notice severe hair loss during the keto regimen, despite all the measures you have taken, consult a specialist and the necessary tests.
